#23 The Twat Files by Dawn French

Discover the truth behind the many, many times Dawn French has been a complete twat over the last sixty years.

When I was younger I wanted to be an interesting, sophisticated, semi-heroic, multi-layered person.

BUT.

That kind of perfect is impossible. Being an actual twat is much more the real me. Sorry to boast, but I am a champion twat.

In The Twat Files I will tell you about all the times I’ve been a total and utter twat. The moments where I’ve misunderstood stuff and messed up. In my life these have been key because:

Mistakes tell us about ourselves.

Mistakes tell us about others.

Mistakes are hilarious.

Mistakes expose our flaws.

Mistakes show us ourselves honestly.

Mistakes are gloriously human.

My hope is that these stories might fire up yer engines to remind you of just what a massive twat you also are.

Let’s celebrate and revel in this most delightful of traits together.

That would be perfectly twatty.

I grew up with Dawn French on my TV. Laughing at Dawn French’s comedy was a staple in my home growing up and when I realised she had written a biography, it seemed very good fortune that I had a spare audible credit.

This audiobook is 5 and a half hours long. I started listening to it at work and I had to turn it off in the end. It made me laugh so much and I don’t mean like a little smile and titter. I was laughing so much I had tears in my eyes. It was a big belly laugh moment. People in the office were worried about me, concerned about what was causing this reaction in me.

From there, I only listened to this audiobook during my commute, the laughter didn’t stop. If anything, it got louder as there was no one there to hear it! I am currently replaying it so that my mum can listen to it (she doesn’t have audible) and while she only listened to the first chapter last night, the laughs were vibrant.

Autobiography audiobooks hit a little different, especially when narrated by the autobiographer. It’s one thing to write your own autobiography but to narrate it as well takes courage, I think. I have read many an autobiography before and be underwhelmed but I’ve also read ones that have made me laugh.

I think that’s enough use of the word autobiography now.

Dawn French is, quite comically a funny person. I’m usually unable to watch her without falling into fits of giggles. The Twat Files explores all the moments of ‘twattery’ in her life, from the humiliating and embarassing to the idiotic and unobserved. From beginning to end it is a joy to listen to. Dare I say, the best audiobook I’ve listened to in 2024 (which is a small list).

Some of her Twat stories are unique to herself, but quite a few of them hark to similar or exact replicas of things that have happened to me, which made the listen more relatable. We all have twat moments. We are all twats. Let’s embrace it.

I dare you to listen to this audiobook and if you don’t laugh out loud at least once, I’ll, well, be very disappointed in you!
