đź“–31đź“–Crescent Kingdom (The Wolves of Crescent Creek Book 1) by Tessa Hale

Never stop running. And no matter what, never let the world know who you really are.
I’ve spent my whole life hiding. Training. Preparing. Hoping that no one will discover my secrets. What I can do. Who I am. And I’ve gotten so good at it, sometimes even I forget.
Until them.
The wolf pack with a ruthless reputation and a penchant for revenge. The protective fighter. The charming Brit. The shy hacker. The silent mercenary. The cruel assassin.
They see more than anyone ever has before. And even with demons of their own, they give me sanctuary. A place to hide, to rest, and maybe even a place to belong.
Only it turns into so much more. Because when they touch me, everything around me ignites, and nothing matters but them.
But these wolves have secrets. And those secrets bring enemies. And when they find out who I really am?
It’s not their enemies I need to fear. It’s them

Okay, now this was a good book!

I knew that if I took a break from reading after my last read that I would fall into a slump of no reading, so I persevered. I’m glad I did. I cleaned out my Kindle library – I had books in there from 2022 I was never going to read – and picked a book that hasn’t been waiting too long.

Listen, I know the whole supernatural wolf shifter romance has been over done. I agree, there are SO MANY terrible stories out there. This was not one of them. It wasn’t wholly unique or original but it was well written and had good characters with good development. The book has multiple p.o.v. chapters. This is a 1 woman 5 man harem.

Wren has been running all her life and struggling to survive. We get little tidbits from her life with her mother on the run and little tidbits of the horror she endured with her father.

Kingston is the top Alpha of the Crescent Creek Wolves. He has that leadership mentality. He’s possessive but he cares deeply about the wellfare of women.

Locke is sensitive, not a dominant wolf. He is the tech savvy guy. He is calm and comforting. He has trouble accepting that he has worth but he makes Wren feel a pinprick of safety.

Puck is the charmer. The flirter. The ‘I’ll always fuck and never date’ guy with a trauma-filled past. He makes the wisecracks. He gives a lot of banter. Keeps Wren on her toes.

Brix is a strongarm. He can’t stand physical touch; it causes him pain. He already knew of Wren but was impressed by her fighting skills. He becomes enamoured and possessive.

Ender is a piece of shit. Paranoid. Secretive. Untrusting. He sees danger around every corner. He doesn’t want to let Wren in, he rejects her. He sneers at her, argues with her, calls her out. He has an adorable cat with dwarfism but he’s still a dick.

Wren, who has spent her entire life running, finds she is unable to when she meets these five men, these wolves. She knows it would be safer for her to leave Crescent Creek, but she never quite manages to do so. As the reader, we learn about her past through snippets of her thoughts or the words of other characters. There is serious damage there. Serious trauma. Not something that anyone would get over easily, in fiction or real life.

Characters who have trauma but are also fighters are hard to predict. I’ve seen some beautifully written characters and some barely written characters. In my experience the realness of a character doesn’t just come from how their written but from the authors own experiences or imagination.

Wren is more than meets the eye. Complex. Mystical. As a reader I felt I learned so little of her in this book but still felt a connection to her.

I think there is more going on than this plot exposed during this read, and knowing that there are a further 2 books to read, has me pondering on which way the plot will go and how it will shape the characters.

I should have expected the ‘reveal’ if you will but I didn’t because I wasn’t looking for it. I was too wrapped up in the characters and the emotion of the scene.

Knowing what happened in the final pages, I’m curious to see what Wren will learn and whether it will help or hinder her. I’m curious about whether it will strengthen her bond with the 5 male characters or weaken it. I’m curious about Ender and his character development.

I think it’s too much to hope…but I hope I don’t meet her father.
