📖Breakers (Academy of Stardom Book 3) by Bea Paige

Dance brought us back together. Our pain and hurt bled out with every movement, with every step across the dancefloor. The Breakers never expected to love me again and I never believed we could get past our pain. Yet here we are. My Breakers are mine once more. But nothing is ever that simple when it comes to us. True happiness only comes when you’re free. Free to love. Free to dance. Free to live. But that kind of freedom comes at a high price. The Breakers are still members of the Skins. Jeb is still their leader. David is still a psychopath, and now there are new enemies to contend with. Dance might have brought us back together, but it’s going to take more than a beautiful routine to keep us all alive. It’s time for the Breakers to own up to their truth, just like I did. It’s time for the Breakers to live up to their name. It’s time for the Breakers to start breaking things.

I barely gave myself time to breath after finishing book 2 before I jumped into reading this. I had a craving to know what would happen to the characters after the explosive cliffhanger of the second book.

Although this book is packed full of action and smut, I felt that it moved at a slower pace. This seemed necessary as the characters had a lot that needed to be worked on and ironing out the kinks takes time.

Pen is still a feisty warrior, but this book showed that even she has her limits. There was a strong emphasis on friendship in this instalment of the series, as well as trust, family, and love.

To even out the increased level of violence in this book there was of course an increase in the level of smut, but I think it balanced the characters out and allowed them to be shown in various states of emotion.

Pen as a character has evolved enough to let people in – a little – and it shows in this book. She’s always been confident and strong, but we see her in a more vulnerable state in this book and for me personally, it just made me love her that little bit more.

A lot of layers are unravelled in this book which was exciting to see because I got answers to some of the questions I was having. I still have questions left unanswered, but I am confident I’ll get what I need in the final book of the series.

In this book we see Grim, and Beast become more central to the plot and their relationship between each other and their relationship with the five main characters gets explored in more depth. I like Grim as a character, so I was interested in seeing her become more central with what was going on. There are also some new characters introduced and some old ones brought back. I think the characters combined brought a new feel to the story and made it feel more edgy and demanding in a way that would have been impossible with just the five main characters.

As for Pen’s men, the Breakers…getting to see them own their pain and work through it rather than keep it bottled up was a treat. This book explores not just what Pen went through but what the Breakers went through and gives the reader a better understanding of their individual characters. There are sweet moments between Pen and the Breakers and also rough moments. The balance is getting to show the reader the complexity of their relationship while still ensuring the positives.

From reading this series I know that Pen and the Breakers come from ‘darkness’. I know their childhood and early adulthood has been fraught with danger and that they’ve learned to survive in a world that would see them dead. It’s clear to see their turmoil in this book and the anguish that comes with what they’ve seen and done. However, the more sedate pace of the book around the action allows the reader to come to terms with what the characters have gone through individually and see them come together as a complete unit.

Restarting a relationship based on truth and honesty is admirable between them as each individual has a cross to bear and a closet of hidden skeletons.

It will be interesting to see what the final book has in store for them and whether getting their HEA is something available to them or not.

I give this heart pumping book: ✨✨✨✨✨
