This book had so much potential, and I was excited to start reading it. A human Detective Sydney, mixed with the supernatural world of vampires, wolves. Witches and more. Yet it fell so short of the mark that I feel hardly any disappointment and am left with lingering frustration.

The first couple of chapters of this book held so much promise and I began getting into the environment that was set up. Murders happening in Philly, an independent female detective having to work with a slightly arrogant sinfully attractive vampire to solve it. It held a lot of promise. It was exciting.

It wasn’t to be…By about chapter 10, the plot had almost become a second string thought to the overture of ‘make love to me’, ‘I love you’, ‘I’m falling for you’, incessant narrative that was both mindnumbingly boring and nausea inducing. It was an injustice to both the characters and the plot.

This book is the first in a series of 14 books with over 8,000 4 star + reviews on amazon. I expected much more from it.

Sydney started as an independent, headstrong female detective who was hellbent on solving crimes, putting her career first and building a good life for herself. She meets Kade at the crime scene of a body that quickly becomes both human and supernatural in nature. Sydney finds Kade delectable but in the beginning she is firm in her desire to keep her work life professional and her personal life separate. She is not a character who willingly opens herself up to love or indeed someone who is looking for anything more than a quick fix.

Kade, a vampire who comes to Philly as a favour to an old friend, Tristan – an Alpha wolf, is charmed by Sydney. Her fierceness, determination, and strength lure him into her space and it is very clear that he wants her in every way possible from a very early point in the book.

This could have been an incredible slow burn story. Again, it was not.

It is clear to me that these characters were formed first, the plot second. Neither worked cohesively together. There was a clear divide and the two aspects fought against each other making it a pull and stop read.

Urghhh. I really cannot find it within myself to write anything positive about this book. I am so infuriated by the way it played out and the ending of it. I would liken this, I suppose to the level I expect from cozy crime or infuriating triangle romance fantasy books. Reading it pissed me off, and I got more angry the more I read. It should have been a DNF but I made a promise to myself this year to finish every book I start to read.

I would not, in any circumstances recommend this book. If you are a fan of smutty or spicy supernatural romance books – this is not it. It is so completely lacking. The vampires in this book who turned to ash and died had more enjoyment than I did reading this.
